Torment is the second novel in this series. Luce has to change schools because of the Outcasts. The Outcasts are people who are blind and they only see the people’s souls burning within them. They are after Luce and want to kill her. Daniel hides her at Shoreline, a school that is okay with people having wings. Her teachers begin to teach her the rules of Announcers. Announcers are shadows. In the first book they make it seem as if they are evil, but they aren’t really. She learns that you can go back into the past by using the Announcers. Throughout the novel she continues to wonder if her and Daniel’s love is worth it. She begins to fall in love with her friend Miles, testing her love with Daniel. Luce feels different with Miles. She couldn’t see Daniel at all because the Outcasts. They would find both of them and kill them. In the end of the novel, there was another battle for Luce. The Outcasts versus the Angels/Fallen Angels. The Outcasts didn’t want to kill anyone, all they wanted was Luce. If she would have just gone with them, the next novel wouldn’t have happened. After the battle, Luce called to an Announcer, stretching it and making it so she can step into it. She wanted to see if the love that Luce and Daniel had was worth fighting for. She didn’t want to go through this over and over again; living until she’s seventeen and then dying all over again. She stepped into the past, leaving everyone else behind. Now that I think about it, this might be my second favorite novel in this series. The battle between the angels and the Outcasts was my favorite part. I think it was because of the imagery that the author used. You can literally imagine the wings of Daniel expanding in the air, completely white as it blinds you. The arrows that they use, silver, and can only kill the Angels or the Outcasts. It can only gently cut a human being. The way she explains everything makes you want to read more, including the next books.
She felt the words rising up in her throat. I love you. She did. She did forever. But if she and Daniel had forever, their love could wait until she figured out a few important things about herself. About her lives and the life she had ahead of her. Tonight there was only time to wave goodbye, take a deep breath, and leap into the dismal shadow.
Into darkness.
Into her past.
